Positive info about Nashville's skatepark
Nashville Parks and Rec seems very happy with their free, open access, lighted, all concrete public skatepark.
(Superintendent of Metro Parks and Recreation, John) Holmes said the Skatepark has not been much of a burden on the city since there is so little maintenance and upkeep involved."One thing about this group or this culture is they police it themselves," Holmes said. "They take pride in keeping the trash off the actual skate surface. We've left brooms out, and they'll sweep it themselves."

THAT IS AWESOME! they had a tiny little park in bristol, tn, where i went to school. it was rad, too. they just paved over a single tennis court, tossed some ramps and poles up, and let kids go at it. it was always in decent shape, too.
and it all started with kids going to city hall meetings and making their voices heard. if we work together on this, we could likely get something like this going in chattanooga as well. if you're interested, drop me a line. granted, i don't have a ton of time to spend developing plans and whatnot, but i have some resources up my sleeve.

Daniel, I agree. I think Chattanooga's current park is OK "for what it is". However, having traveled all over the U.S. checking out skateparks with my kids... there are much better skatepark models in terms of design, management, and community.
My kids are bummed on the Chattanooga park because of the location, the restrictiveness, the ramps, etc... But mention Nashville's park, and their eyes light up!

Ahhhh.....the cat from the Nash-Vegas Metro-Parks Dept. thinks of us as a culture, eh? I guess that's an accurate statement as any. As far as the Parks Dept. leaving a broom for me to use, shoot, I always have my own with me.....
